Thursday, 2 August, 2018

On 16 July 2018, Independent Development Evaluation (IDEV) presented its 2017 Annual Report to the African Development Bank Group Committee on Operations and Development Effectiveness.

Themed “Getting to Results”, the 2017 Annual Report accounts for IDEV’s evaluation products and activities completed during the year. It also sets out how these achievements contributed to accountability and learning in the area of the African Development Bank’s operational priorities, the High5s; provided evidence for better programs, policies and processes, as well as institutional effectiveness, at the African Development Bank; and helped strengthen evaluation capacity within and outside the Bank.

The selected theme, Getting to Results, reflects IDEV’s commitment to strengthen the institution’s evaluative learning through knowledge that is timely, useful, and adapted to the Bank’s development agenda.

The report highlights key findings, lessons learned and recommendations drawn from the eight influential evaluations, one comparative study and two knowledge events on private sector development completed by IDEV in 2017. It also describes some of the key challenges faced by IDEV and concludes by presenting IDEV’s strategic priorities and future plans for the year 2018, notably in the area of learning and partnerships.

“Overall, the IDEV evaluations conducted in 2017 noted that the effectiveness of the Bank funded operations is satisfactory. Frequently noted weaknesses were in the areas of sustainability, efficiency and inclusiveness. Continuous investment and promoting learning at an institutional level will be key to generating the knowledge that can further boost development impact and improve corporate performance” said Rakesh Nangia, Evaluator General at the African Development Bank Group.

IDEV provides evidence for a more effective and efficient African Development Bank for greater and lasting development impact in Africa. All its evaluations are publicly available on the IDEV website.

The IDEV Annual Report 2017 is available in English and French.
